geekruminations replied to your post: I’m surprised no one has attempted collecting all the FLO gifs and put them in one massive post, essentially retelling the entire film in only gifs.
I’ve actually never seen the movie. Is it good? I hear mixed reviews from people.
Putting aside all my love for Stana Katic, putting aside the fangirling tendencies I have towards this movie, and putting aside to want to yell from the rooftops of just how much I love this movie. I’m going to give it to you straight. I real ass review of “For Lovers Only”, with no bias.
Spoiler warning-
For those who don’t know, “For Lovers Only” tells the story of two former lovers reuniting in a beautifully shot Paris. They then spend the next few days rekindling their love/lust(?) for each other while peeling away the facades they have been showing the world. The major questions that comes into play is do they continue this love affair they’ve rediscovered, regardless of the consequences and who get’s hurt in the long run, or do they stop, realize that maybe this is a mistake and go back to their lives.
I know a lot of people aren’t too keen on the whole adultery storyline of this movie, in fact it has turned A LOT of people off from the film. But like every love story, one has to take into account that it isn’t just black and white (like the film), there isn’t just two sides to every story. Putting your own personal judgments aside, and seeing the love that was once there between the two characters and seeing them now try and reignite that, it’s actually very beautiful, because you have these two characters who are mostly unhappy with their current station in life and are just moving through the motions not really knowing what they are going to do next. And it is in this meeting, this reuniting of the two, that gives them that wake up call that they’ve needed all this time. It gives them a chance to examine where they are in life and thus giving them the knowledge to try and come up with a decision of what to do with their lives next, be it together or apart.
The film itself is beautifully shot, and the use of the DSLR cameras really give the director Michael Polish a chance to get shots he normally would not be able to get using the standard in film making. It gives the film a much more intimate view and setting. It goes from just watching these two rediscover their love/lust(?) to you practically become voyeur during their time together. Throw that in with the type of editing used plus the overall feel to the film and it does bring it back to say the French New Wave style of filming.
Plus the music is incredible in both the songs chosen for the soundtrack as well as the score by Kubilay Uner.
Some viewers might find the film to be boring at times, there isn’t that much heavy dialog and due to the way it was film there are moments where one has a hard time understanding what the actors are saying. Some have even said that the movie is way too artsy to follow and that it lays on the artistic view of the director on a little too thick that the basis of the story is lost with all the pretty shots of Paris and Stana Katic.
I personally love the film not so much for how it was filmed nor for Stana Katic, but for the storyline itself. Too often we are all subjected to the type of love story in which guy meets girl - guy woos girls - guy loses girl - guy gets girl back -the end, that seeing a film like this, one that feels like you’re just jumping into the middle of the action and then jumping back out before the ending, a film where the center of the love story isn’t “what will happen next” but “what is going on now” is a breath of fresh air.
Love isn’t prefect and that is what this movie shows us.
